THE inaugural Pozorrubio Invitational Chess Competition reeled off last August 17, with 75 woodpushers seeing action at the Pozorrubio Executive Building.
Organized by the Pozorrubio Sangguniang Kabataan Officials as part of its “Linggo ng Kabataan” festivity, the one-day competition featured three categories: Open, Grassroots and Kiddies.
Jhulo Goloran of the Manila Indios Bravos emerged as champion in the seven-round Swiss System chess invitational, collecting a tournament-high of 6.5 points to claim the P7,000 cash prize and a trophy.
Sherwin Tiu of Manila finished second; followed by Romy Fagon, a seasoned candidate woodpusher of Urdaneta City; Abraham Bayron of Manila and Paul Tabago of Tarlac were fourth and fifth placers, respectively.
Tiu logged in six points while Fagon, Bayron and Tabago each registered 5.5 points, but were ranked according to the tie-breaker points. Tiu bagged P5,000, Fagon received P3,000, Bayron earned P2,000 and Tabago got P1,500.
On the other hand, Gansib Apilada triumphed in the Grassroots Chess title with P2,000 purse while Joash Fritz Aquino ruled the six-Round Swiss Kiddies Category and secured P2,000.
“This competition showcases the brilliance of the top players in the province, elite chess performers from different regions, and the budding homegrown talents who are product of Pozorrubio’s chess development program,” said Pozorrubio Vice Mayor Ernesto Salcedo. (Kim Gealogo)
