THE Umingan National High School boys volleyball team outplayed University of Batangas in four sets: 25-22, 29-31, 25-20, 25-18  in their AB CAMP Volleyball Cup U18 Men’s Division title match last June 28 in Baguio City.

Umingan set the pace early on with the help of its open spikers, Michael Angelo Fernandez and Eric Palad, who connived with 12 points to seize the first set advantage, 25-22.

Moving to the second set, Godwin Briones led University of Batangas’ counterattack with eight points along with two blocks. Eric Palad tried to answer and scored three-consecutive clear-out hits for Umingan but were defused with Briones’ cross-court shots to tie the set at one all.

In the latter sets, Umingan demonstrated its synchronized combination plays and strengthened their net defense when Angelo Fernandez, Rhailey Sampang, and Ron Andrei De Vera combined for 18 attack points, plus five blocks to break away. Matt Aldrich Agsaoay ended the match with a winning kill block point, stopping Briones’ cross-court spike to clinch the championship for Umingan.

The members of Umingan BVT who amassed individual recognitions in the invitational tourney were Raine Christian Mariano (Best Setter), Michael Angelo Fernandez (Best Opposite Spiker), and Josh Bascos (First Best Outside Spiker).

Head coach Eusebio Solis said the Umingan NHS Boys Volleyball team will continue to prepare for the week-long Palarong Pambansa to be held in Cebu City on July 9 to 16, representing Region 1. (Kim Gealogo)
