QC upsets Pangasinan, 78-74

THE Quezon City Aksyon Toda spoiled Pangasinan Heatwaves’ homecourt advantage in a nailbiter, 78-74 in the 6 th MPBL season last June 22, 2024 at the Calasiao Sports Complex.

The Heatwaves had an outstanding start shooting from behind the arc with five triples to greet the first quarter with an early cushion, 26-18.

During the second period, Aksyon Toda countered with Paul Garcia’s 13-point eruption, dropping three triples along with Rhinwill Yambing’s 8-point burst to snatch the lead from Pangasinan at the half, 41-38.

In the third frame, Pangasinan displayed its collective scoring force when Hesed Gabo, Joshua Fontanilla, and Michael Mabulac combined with 20 points to regain the advantage, 58-54.

Heading to the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged buckets in a high intensity action that resulted in six lead changes.

Holding on a slim lead in the final 16 seconds, 73-72, Heatwaves’ Allen Mina was fouled in a layup attempt and drained only one-out-of-two from the free-throw stripe to extend the gap to two.

Trailing from behind, 72-74, Quezon City’s JP Cauilan made a crucial play in the clutch after knocking down a corner triple to secure the win.

Aksyon Toda rode on Rhinwill Yambing’s 19-point performance with nine rebounds and three steals to lead Quezon City on its seventh win. Paul Garcia added 22 points combined with 11 points, seven rebounds and eight assists from Chino Mosqueda.

Heatwaves grabbed 18 points, three rebounds, four assists from Hesed Gabo; 12 points, three boards, two steals from Allen Mina; and 11 points from Ralph Robin.
