THE Pangasinan Heatwaves suffered a crushing defeat in the hands of the number one-seeded Pampanga Giant Lanterns, 50-74 last July 4 at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando City,  Pampanga.

Michael Mabulac started out strong in the shaded area with six points and three rebounds to lead Pangasinan in the scoring column during the opening frame.

Giant Lanterns’ Lervin Flores, however, found gaps in the Heatwaves’ defense play tallied back-to-back and-one opportunity layups and scored six points to tie the game at the end of the quarter, 15-15.

In the second period, Allen Mina alongside Joshua Fontanilla each drilled a triple and combined with nine points for Pangasinan.

On the counter, Lanterns’ Jeff Viernes provided a spark to Pampanga’s offense with two consecutive three-pointers reinforced with Archie Concepcion’s 5-point markers to gain the lead at the half, 36-31

Heading to the third frame, Pampanga shot 15-20 from the field, taking advantage of Pangasinan’s miserable  shooting performance with 3-15 makes from the basket. The Giant Lanterns finally carried on the momentum in the fourth with a 14-0 run triggered by the two-handed slam of Justine  Baltazar to pull away.

Pampanga amassed 21 points and four rebounds from Justine Baltazar; 13 points, six rebounds and two steals from Archie Concepcion; and 12 points from Lervin Flores while Paangasinan collected nine points from Hesed Gabo and six points apiece from Ralph Robin and Michael Mabulac.

It was the 10th loss for the Heatwaves against six wins,  while the Lanterns remained at the top of the Northern Division ranking with 15-1 record in the 6th MPBL season. (Kim Gealogo)
