MAYOR Belen Fernandez told a Committee of the House of Representatives last week that she will no longer allow the Boss Iron Man Motorcycle Endurance Challenge to pass through the city’s national roads after one spectator from the city was run down by a motorcycle of one of the participants and died while watching the event on February 24 this year.

Fernandez was invited as resource speaker in the hearing of the House Committee on Transportation chaired by Rep. Romeo Acop in aid of legislation on the proposal to ban the Boss Iron Man Motorcycle Endurance Challenge throughout the country.

Questioned by Rep. Bonifacio Bosita, Fernandez revealed she was in Thailand attending the United Cities of Local Governments when the event passed through Dagupan and Acting Mayor Bryan Kua did everything to coordinate with the police, Public Order  and Safety Office and other city departments to clear the roads to ensure safety of riders and residents.

Fernandez said she will send a request-letter to the Sangguniang Panlungsod to pass an ordinance banning the motorcycle endurance challenge.

“She revealed that Dagupan first received an email about the event from the office of Pangasinan Governor Ramon Guico III on February 16, 2024 “requesting your full support and cooperation through your local police, ensuring that the rode and clear NDA safe for the riders and providing for the necessary assistance”.

Asked by Rep. Bosita if she was aware that there was one fatality in Dagupan as a result of the event, Mayor Fernandez replied in the affirmative and cited a case was filed by the Dagupan police against the organizers of the motorcycle event relative to the incident.

The Boss Iron Man Motorcycle Endurance Challenge, also being promoted by the Department of Tourism, is participated by some 1,000 or more riders given 24 hours to reach a targeted destination. (Leonardo Micua)
