THE Pangasinan Heatwaves failed to defend their homecourt advantage against the Biñan Tatak Gel Beast in a thrilling match, 72-75 last May 18 at the Calasiao Sports Complex.

The recent blow marked the sixth loss of Pangasinan against only two wins in the 6th MPBL tourney.

In the opening frame, the Heatwaves was off to a cold start, shooting 2-12 from the field and limited to scoring with only seven points.

Biñan took advantage of Pangasinan’s scoring woes behind Robbie Manalang’s three triples with nine points at the half to build a large cushion, 44-29.

Pangasinan weathered the scoring drought in the third quarter to keep the game up close, 58-53.

Gel Beasts’ Jaymar Gimpayan countered with 10 points combined with Tyron Chan’s 5-point midway in the fourth to bring the score to 73-62.

The Heatwaves responded with a 9-0 run to trim the lead to one, 72-73. With 13.5 ticks left, Alvin Baetiong came up big in the clutch and scored a post hook-shot to stretch the lead for Biñan, 75-72.

Heatwaves on the run, Hesed Gabo was fouled in a fastbreak play and was sent to the charity stripes with Biñan over the foul limit. Gabo missed his second free throw on purpose and grabbed the rebound to gain an extra possession. Gabo quickly stepped in the three-point line but missed the potential game-tying shot.

Biñan banked on Jaymar Gimpayan’s 15-point scoring output and nine rebounds alongside the 12-point production of Kenny Rocacurva.

Ralph Robin chipped in 22 points and four boards reinforced with Ian Melencio’s 15 points for Pangasinan.

As of the moment, Pangasinan is sitting at the 12th spot of the standings in the Northern Division of the league. (Kim Gealogo)
