1-Ramon Guico III National Karatedo Open kicks-off

SOME 700 karate jins saw action and showcased their karate brilliance during the recently concluded 1st Ramon Guico III National Karatedo Open last May 11, 2024 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen.

Featured in the one-day invitational tournament are the 25 karate clubs from the province and invited teams from Northern Luzon, Central Luzon and Metro-Manila.

The categories performed are clustered into two: kata (form) and kumite (sparring) which is also classified in five levels including open, novice, intermediate, advanced, and cadet.

Among the winners of the inaugural karate open in Girls Division were: Janna Larete (Open and Novice Kata), Denise Paredes (Intermediate Kata), Lyanna Santiago (Advance Kata), Mayne Palaje (Open Kumite), Xyriel Discipulo (Novice Kumite), Barbie Anne Rubic (Intermediate and Advanced Kumite), and Mae Bernadeth Correa (Cadet Kumite).

The winners in the Boys Division were: Rei-An Eugenio (Open Kata), Daniel Oliveros (Intermediate Kata and Open Kumite), Shane Vasquez (Cadet Kata and Kumite), John Russel Oliveros (Novice Kata), Drake Rabina (Novice Kumite), John Dave Fernando (Advance Kata), and Nyx Rubic (Intermediate and Advanced Kumite).

The karate open was sanctioned by Pangasinan Sports Development and Management Council (PSDMC) led by PSDMC Head Leo Arnaiz alongside Dr. Alejandro Vasquez, National Vice President of Karate Philippine Sports in Pangasinan.

According to Arnaiz, the aim of the fixture is to build a training ground for grassroots athletes to hone their skills and to prepare the young Pangasinense jins for both national and international competitions.

“This event was made possible by Gov. Guico in connection to his “Building of Champions” program with its objective to provide excellent technical know-how of the sport and building the character of homegrown talents in the province”, Arnaiz intoned. (Kim Gealogo)
