Umingan NHS thwarts PCU to advance in semifinal round
PH NATIONAL VOLLEYBALL FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE Umingan National High School swept Philippine Christian University in three-straight sets; 25-22, 25-12, 25-18 in the quarterfinal rounds of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation U18 Championships last April 21 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Umingan had a sloppy start with 4 attack faults that gave PCU an early lead, 5-0.
Raine Mariano, Umingan’s setter orchestrated the offense by activating his middle blocker Rhailey Sampang with back-to-back quick attacks to put Pangasinan in the scoreboard.
Umingan found its rhythm through its net defense and tandem plays to edge PCU in the first set, 25-22with 14 attack points and three blocks.
In the second and final set, Michael Angelo Fernandez, UBVT’s high-flying opposite hitter picked up his scoring groove and tallied 14 attack points, two blocks plus one service ace alongside the contributions of Rhailey Sampang with 10 points, two blocks and Raine Mariano’s superb distribution of plays with 20 excellent sets.
Jay Ynciong for the PCU chalked up eight points, two aces reinforced with Sebastian Sayaman’s seven points but were not sufficient to beat Umingan’s fast-paced combination plays.
Umingan was set to advance in the semifinals against Canossa Academy of Batangas which will be played under the traditional five-setter format in a win-or-go home thriller on April 27, 2024. (Kim Gealogo)
