SIXTEEN-year-old student-cyclist Mark Arvin Armendez from Barangay Palina East, Urdaneta City won a gold medal in the road race and went on to retain his title in the Batang Pinoy Cycling Boys 16-17 years category on December 20 in a competition held in Tagaytay City.

Armendez led the 88-kilometer road race via breakaway finish, clocking two hours and five minutes ahead of the 75 wheelers from 16 participating regions.

The Pangasinense was trailing behind cyclists from Candon City and Taguig City during the final kilometer run.

Armendez found an opportunity to breakaway in the last 20 second mark to snatch the crown.

Aside from conquering the 2022 Batang Pinoy Cycling title in Boys 15-16 category in Vigan, the back-to-back champ managed to defend his throne despite experiencing leg cramps in the final 15 km.

Armendez, a student at Luzon College of Science and Technology in Urdanerta, is training under the mentorship of head coach Rex Badongen. (Kim Gealogo)
