MARK Anthony Fernandez of Mapandan emerged victorious on the athletics track during the Provincial Selection Tryouts for the Philippine National Games. He achieved two gold medals in the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter steeplechase events held on October 3 at the Narciso Ramos Sports Complex in Lingayen.

Steeplechase is an athletic event that involves sprinting, jumping over large hurdles, and landing in water pits on the track.

Fernandez, a 21-year-old from Barangay Primicias, Mapandan, trains under Coach Lany Cardona Adaoag. In the competition, he faced off against 12 athletes in the 1,500-meter event and overcame six hurdlers in the 3,000-meter event.

Expressing his gratitude for his unexpected success at the selection meet, Fernandez stated, “This is my first time running and competing on a track oval.”

Fernandez’s outstanding performances at the provincial tryouts secured him a spot in both the 1,500 and 3,000-meter steeplechase categories, where he will represent Pangasinan in the Philippine National Games scheduled for December 17 to 22. (Kim Gealogo)
