Balon Dagupan Swimming Club wins in Cherifer Grand Prix Swimming Meet

THE Balon Dagupan Swim Club, competing against 46 top swimming teams in the country,  bagged the overall championship in the Cherifer Grand Prix Invitational Swim Meet last August 19-21 held at the New Clark Aquatic Center in Capas, Tarlac.

The three-day swimming competition participated in by top collegiate swimmers from Central Luzon, Northern Luzon, Cordillera Administrative Region and Manila, served as qualifying event to determine qualifiers to the national swimming team that will represent the Philippines in international swimming events.

The Dagupan Swim Club formed by Dagupan Youth and Sports Development Program Officer Finnela Sim garnered 672 points, to wind up on top of the field, followed by the 549.50 points of MDSF Vikings (Bulacan) as 1st runner-up while the second runner-up honor went to the Modern Aquatic Swim Club (Bulacan) with 452 points.

The Balon Dagupan swimmers who made it as national qualifiers after winning gold medals in their respective events were Maria Genevieve Barrozo, Reuben Gerald Casipit, Joaquin Antonio Catapang, Juliana Elaine Catapang, Aleksander Jiro Cayabyab, Cielo Espiritu, Matthew Gaerlan, Samantha Lopez, Gabriel Angelo Jizmundo and Jeremy Carlo Jizmundo.

The club’s other gold medalists are McKenzie Dale Domalanta, Kurt Allen Pedrocha, Maria Genevieve Barrozo and Cielo Espiritu.

All made impressive performance in this prestigious swimming event despite the rejection of the request of Mayor Belen Fernandez for funds to bankroll the continuing training of athletes, including the maintenance and repair of the Dagupan Olympic-size swimming pool by the seven members of the majority in the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

“We are proud of them dahil tinalo nila and 46 teams, kabilang ang mag bigating eskwelahan sa Maynila,” Mayor Belen Fernandez said. (Leonardo Micua)
