UL Taekwondo jins snatch 2 gold, 2 silver
THE University of Luzon Taekwondo Club bagged two gold and two bronze medals in four different categories at the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Games, representing Dagupan City.
The UL taekwondo jins who garnered the gold were Marc Darylle Bagot, who triumphed in Kyurugi Junior Bantamweight category, and Earl Maynard Sarmiento, who won in Kyurugi Senior Open Weight category.
Meanwhile, Jonah Marie Carpio seized the bronze in Kyurugi Senior Featherweight category, and Ronzjie Cancino snatched the bronze in Senior Kyurugi Flyweight category.
Kyurugi, known as sparring in taekwondo, is one of the free-form fight between two people subjected to strikes and blocks using the arms, elbows, knees and fists.
Before the PRISAA Games, the team members underwent rigorous training and observed proper diet for them to maintain the weight that they need to qualify for the bout.
Head Coaches Bernard Gonzales and Carl Labasan mentored the team.
During the 3rd and final round in Kyurugi Bantamweight against Davao Region, taekwondo jin Darylle Bagot was behind by 11 points with 40 seconds remaining but he managed to stage a comeback by a 5-point margin which he acquired when his opponent was slapped with 5 gam-jeoms or penalties as time was ticking off.
“This modern day era of taekwondo heavily relies on wits, so I have to outplay my opponent using his aggression luring him to attack more while I defend well and use counters as the game, ended so the points were awarded to me”, Bagot said.
The UL Taekwondo Club is set to see action next in the Region 1 Age Group Taekwondo Championship sometime in September. (Kim Gealogo, University of Luzon Intern)
