San Carlos coed bags silver in int’l karate tourney

A FEMALE student from San Carlos City, Mikee Abigail Abarquez bagged a silver medal in the kata category during the 2nd Shureido International Karate Cup held at SM MOA Music Hall last June 23-25 sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo and  Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation.

Abarquez, 19, a third year criminology student at St. Therese College in San Carlos City, was discovered by Trisha Jimenez, team captain of Wado Ryu Karatedo Phils,

Hosted by the Philippines, the Shureido International Cup is an international karate event in the country participated in by 800 athletes from different karate clubs in the Philippines, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Kata, which means form, is executed through sequences of martial arts movements such as kicks, punches and blocks and has to be practiced alone.

Her preparations prior to the kata event were focused on the techniques of execution, mental toughness and weekend trainings which lasted for two months.

She said she mastered the techniques and stances to overcome the challenge of mental lapses which can affect the points of her performance.

Her coach, Jimenez, advised Mikee amidst training sessions to have balanced workouts and rest so that her body can rest from tress. This paid off and gave her a silver podium finish.

The San Carlenian learned the sport karate for more than a year as part of the curriculum requirement in her criminology course that adopted karate in Physical Education programs.

Abarquez and her team, have their eyes set on other local and international karate tournaments to further hone their skills. (Kim Gealogo, University of Luzon Intern)
