The University of Pangasinan Webczars will continue to hone their skills for the year when they clash with the Mangaldan All Stars in a “goodwill match’ on March 3 at 5 p.m. at the Macario Ydia Development Center. The event is in conjunction with the celebration of the host town Mangaldan fiesta.

The Webczars scored a 107-57 victory early this year against the Malasiqui All Stars last January at the Agno Valley College gym during the Malasiqui town fiesta.

Their March 3 hostility will be their second of the season in preparation for the 2006 Pangasinan Academies Schools Colleges Universities (PASCU) basketball tournament tentatively scheduled on the third quarter of the year.

This will be the second collision for the Webczars and the Mangaldan quintet. The driblers of head coach Angel Gumarang plastered the Mangaldanons, 102-73, in their first encounter held at barangay David, Mangaldan last October.

Gumarang and his assistant tactician Jay Ronquillo are confident they can duplicate their supremacy since they are better trained and more cohesive.

“I’m not belittling our opponent simply because some of my boys were members of the Region 1 team that competed in the just concluded PRISAA National Games where we landed fourth out of 13 regions. We have the advantage in speed, teamwork and with reliable outside shooters which count most in basketball games,” Gumarang explained.

Gumarang will rely on his ‘first five’ Terry Torio, Bryan Santillan, Albert Carcha, Renato Soriano and Virgilio Olero. The five will be beefed up by Rufino Caguin, Cresencio Maminta, Llenel Manalo, Gian Carlo Cruz, Joey Abalos, Joey Operana and Dante Bartolome.

The Mangaldan quintet which copped the second runner-up plum in the 2004 Pangasinan Inter-Cities Inter-Town Basketball Tournament is composed of the come-backing William Manaois, University of Luzon Golden Tigers stalwarts Christopher de Vera and Rodolfo Natavio, Ian Samson, Ildefonso Mejia, Jose Obrar, Rodel   Santos, Sherwin Arriola, Wilmer Espinosa, Kim Tiong, Alexis Aquino, Norberto Carino and Elcid Garcia.

The team will be steered by JR Fabia and Danny Villanueva.

The ‘goodwill match’ is under the initiative and auspices of the town’s chief executive, sports buff Herminio A. Romero.
