THE San Fabian bikefest scheduled to be staged on January 22 in conjunction with the celebration of its town fiesta was cancelled because of financial constraint and the hectic schedules of the town’s chief executive. But thanks to councilor Roland Z. Villegas, his timely intervention, the event was held without any hitch.
Villegas, a motocross racing expert and president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) of the said town didn’t think twice to support the sports event but this time to coincide with his barangay day (Jan. 20), which townmate Sherwin Carrera ruled.
He pedaled through the 90-kilomter event in a convincing fashion to pocket the P5,000 top prize plus medal.
Using his international skill with plenty to spare, Carrera, 22, successfully broke away from a four-man lead pack 25 kilometers from the finish, and crossed the line all by his lonesome to register a time of two hours 37 minutes and 32 seconds of the 90-kilometer trek.
Mangaldanon Adrian Malanum came in second, a minute 10 seconds off the pace to bag P4,000 plus medal. Another hometown boy Ardie Bucao checked in third and earned P3,000, also with medal.
San Jacinto native Pepito Calosa who suffered a flat tire 24 kilometers before the finish landed fourth while Sta. Barbara stalwart Loreto dela Carsel finished fifth and received P1,000 and P700 plus medals, respectively.
Ariel Flores, Jeffrey Caritativo, Randy Castanares, Arnold Estillore and Arsenio Mengarine placed sixth to tenth, repectively to net P500 each.
All finishers received P100 apiece.
Fifty-five participants from the province and neighboring places were flagged off infront of the town’s catholic school before noon. The riders passed the town’s barangays of Tempra, Bolasi, Mabilao, Lipit, Palapad, Tomeeng, Anonang and Angio. The cyclists traversed the same route five times with some rough stretches at barangay Anonang, the village of the chief organizer, Villegas.
The peculiar race was co-sponsored by Speaker JDV, SBM John Rosario (4th district), Engr. Nelson Sotto, Robert Dix, Alpha Insurance, DPWH Region 1 Director Fidel D. Ginez and the province second engineering district czar Rodolfo “Boy” Dion.
Elated by the success of the affair, Villegas, the 2005 national champion in the motocross executive division happily announced that another event will be staged this coming summer. He said it will be staged in a different route, distance and with bigger prizes at stake. The details will be announced later.
