WASTE CRISES SUMMIT: CLOSE THE 60-YR OLD DUMPSITE
UNLISERBISYO
THE Dagupan City Government, headed by Mayor Belen Fernandez, stands firm on the closure of the 60-year-old dumpsite in barangay Bonuan, assuring stakeholders at the “Goodbye Basura” Summit on Waste Crises held Thursday, February 20, at the CSI Stadia. The long-day event, supported by the DENR and Waste Management Division (WMD) led by WMD Officer Bernard Cabison and Atty. Gil Aromin was attended by DENR representatives, WMD, 31 barangay captains and barangay kagawads, SK Chairpersons, Department of Education officials, schools and universities and business sectors.
Mayor Fernandez defined the waste crisis as a huge responsibility, as the closing of dumpsite will also address the public health, the flooding, and part of the city’s Tondaligan Blue Beach Tourism and Development Project. “We are here because our waste crisis has become an environmental crisis; it’s a serious concern,” the mayor said. The local chief executive shared the chronological history of the city’s solid waste management since the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 or the Republic Act 9003 was passed, when the massive garbage at the dumpsite was at worst level. The mayor remained optimistic as she expressed her gratitude to Holcim Philippines, Inc. as Dagupan’s partner for a “long term” and effective solution to put an end to the dumpsite.
