PCS, PRC, L-NU host mass blood donation drive
THE Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS), in collaboration with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), held a Mass Blood Donation Campaign at the Lyceum Northwestern University (L-NU) Gymnasium from September 9 to 11.
The event aimed to collect over 300 blood bags to replenish blood supply in Region 1.
Mae Diane Alano, PRC Pangasinan chapter head, highlighted that anyone between the ages of 18 and 65 is eligible to donate blood. Those aged 16 to 17 can also participate, provided they submit a parental consent form.
Before donating, all participants undergo a brief health check, and their blood is tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Malaria.
Although test results won’t be available immediately, the blood will be sent to the main blood bank in Manila for processing and centrifugation, where it will be separated into three components: Red Blood Cells, Plasma, and Platelets or also known as Buffy Coat.
Should any blood test positive for HIV, donors will be contacted for counseling and further assistance.
While blood donations are free of charge, the PRC Cross clarified that the processing and screening tests carried out at the blood bank are chargeable. (Ahikam Pasion)
