THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) celebrated Arbor Day last June 25 with a tree planting activity in Sitio Tagaytay, Barangay Macaycayawan in Sual.

DENR Regional Executive Director Crizaldy Barcelo led the activity drew some 300 participants who planted some 5,000 seedlings of acacia (batino manguium), narra (Pterocarpus indicus) and agoho (Casuarina equisetifolia).

The greening activity was launched by the Pangasinan Provincial Environment and Natural Office (PENRO), the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Alaminos City, and the local government units of Sual and Barangay Macaycayawan.

Barcelo said that tree planting goes beyond ceremonial compliance to actual  environmental stewardship, quoting the well-known passage, “Plant a tree, bear a child, and write a book — these are the legacies that outlive us.”

The activity was participated in by personnel of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), along with members of non-government organizations like CleanTech, among others.
