Dagupan scholar now a registered nurse
A girl from a poor family who obtained a four-year scholarship from the Dagupan City government is now a registered nurse after passing the licensure examination.
Honored during a program after the flag-raising ceremony at the city plaza on May 19, Joana Marie de la Cruz graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Pangasinan last year.
“It make us proud that another Dagupeña was able to finish her education because of our scholarship program,” Mayor Belen Fernandez said, “Nakakataba rin ng puso na hindi lang ang isang bata ang napasaya natin, kundi pati rin ang kanyang mga magulang.”
De la Cruz obtained her scholarship in 2021 under the previous administration, which was continued during the Fernandez administration.
“Maraming salamat po sa opportunity na ito at parte po tayo ng programang ito,” De la Cruz said and wished that more students from poor families would be given the same opportunity.
She was among the 5,000 scholars enrolled in different colleges and universities in Dagupan City under the Belen Fernandez administration from July 2022, which allotted P200 million yearly for the scholarship program.
Fernandez said that with a commanding majority in the city council in her next term of office starting July 1, 2025, she will ask her teammate, Vice Mayor Kua and the next city councilors to increase the number of scholars from 5,000 to 6,000.
Underscoring that education is one of the priorities of her administration, Fernandez also announced that air-conditioning units will be added to new two to three-story school buildings that will be constructed within the city in consideration of increasing heat index. (Leonardo Micua)
