Alaminos City students bag awards in US science fair
THREE young researchers from the Alaminos City National High School bannered the Philippines when they won the Qatar Research Development and Innovation Council Special Award during the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held last May 16 in Columbus, Ohio, USA.
The Regeneron ISEF is an annual science forum where contestants from other countries showcase their independent research groups and compete for significant awards, scholarships, and other prizes.
Grade 11 STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, Mathematics) students Charly David Manuel, Rey Alfred Quiam, and Klein Gunneries Bubos were part of the group that earned the prestigious award under Translational Medical Science Diagnosis Category with their research “EDAD: Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease Utilizing Low-Cost Plasma Peptide Extraction, Atmospheric Pressure Mass Spectrometer, and Support Vector Machine-Based Classification of Amyloid-beta Species.”
“EDAD is a tool that helps to detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease quickly and affordably. It utilizes a simple blood test, advanced scanning technology, and smart computer analysis to spot early warning signs of the disease, giving people a better chance at early treatment” said Manuel.
The students were mentored by research adviser Kris Cristhopher Dela Cruz. (Kim Gealogo)
