Mangaldan holds annual ‘Bong-Bong Bona’ celebration
MANGALDAN celebrated its annual Bong-Bong Bona 2024 on Monday, December 30, at the town’s public auditorium, showcasing a spectacular contest featuring 17 bamboo cannons locally called bong-bong.
This traditional competition, initiated by Mayor Bona Fe de Vera Parayno, aims to preserve the custom of celebrating New Year’s Eve with the indigenous noise-maker.
Participants competed for cash prizes, with winners taking home P3,000 each in various categories, including “Sangka-mabalangobongan ya bongbong” (Boomiest Cannon) and “Sangka-arawian ya bongbong” (Farthest-reaching Cannon). Additionally, prizes of P5,000, P7,000, and P10,000 were awarded for the “Sangka-bonggaan ya BongBong” (Best Dressed Bamboo Cannon) category.

For Sangka-Bonggaan ya Bongbong (Best Dressed Bamboo Cannon): 1st Place: Melchor Aquino, Barangay Bari; 2nd Place: Noli Rosalin Jr., Barangay Malabago; and 3rd Place: Rading Abrigo, Barangay David
Sangka-Mabalangobongan ya Bongbong (Boomiest Cannon): John Caballero, Barangay Talogtog.
