San Nicolas honors migrant labor leader Larry Itliong
THE town of San Nicolas celebrated the inaugural Larry Itliong Day on November 6, a commemoration and tribute to its son, Modesto “Larry” Dulay Itliong, who was a key figure in the Filipino labor movement in the United States in the 1930s.
Held at the municipal gymnasium, the celebration was highlighted by a keynote speech from award-winning journalist and TV documentarist Howie Severino, who shared inspiring stories and messages under the theme “Di Ka Pasisiil” (Never Give Up), and a special performance by Filipino-American Broadway actor Miguel Braganza II.
The event was organized by the Municipal Tourism Office and the US-based Larry Itliong Day Philippine Campaign (LIDPC) Group, led by Eliseo Silva, in partnership with GMA Pinoy TV as media sponsor.
Other activities included the Dap-ay Learning Circles, interactive sessions focused on cultural heritage and community building, Poster Making and Chalk Art, Storytelling Sessions that showcased personal accounts of struggles and triumphs, and a bazaar that showcased local products and handicrafts.
Born in San Nicolas in 1913, Itliong migrated to the United States to look for greener pasture, and later led Filipinos in demanding better treatment and rights from their American employers and the government. (Erica Mae J. Ortiz/Intern)
