Manaoag erects Emilio Aguinaldo marker
A marker commemorating the first President of the Republic of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo, was unveiled in Manaoag on Wednesday, November 13.
According to Mayor Jeremy Agerico Rosario, research conducted with the assistance of the National Historical Commission (NHC) revealed that Aguinaldo, who was also a military leader during the revolution in the late 1800s, passed through Manaoag when he was being pursued by American soldiers before his eventual capture in Palanan, Isabela.
He said it is an honor for Manaoag to have played a role in Philippine history, in addition to being a prominent pilgrimage town.
The marker funded by the National Historical Commission is in front of the Presidencia.
The NHC also plans to put up markers in other towns along the route that Aguinaldo traversed on his journey to Palanan, Isabela.
Historian and Pangasinan translator Melchor Orpilla earlier said they are also processing a request to the NHC to recognize Alaminos City’s role during the revolution, as the area considered a beacon of the fight for freedom in western Pangasinan, then a part of northern Zambales. (Ahikam Pasion)
