Edades-Bernal Museum to rise in Dagupan
A new cultural landmark will soon rise in Dagupan, honoring and celebrating the achievements of its two national artist sons, Victorio Edades and Salvador Bernal.
The Edades and Bernal Cultural Center and Museum, to be located along the Jose de Venecia Expressway in Barangay Pantal, will showcase the works of Edades, known as “the father of modern Philippine painting,” and Bernal, “the father of theater design.”
Edades joined the ranks of National Artists for Visual Arts in 1976 while Bernal in 2003.
The groundbreaking ceremony on November 15 was led by 4th District Rep. Christopher de Venecia, the principal author of Republic Act No. 11726 that mandates the establishment of the center.
Other attendees included Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez; National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Deputy Executive Director Marichu Tellano; Zheanne Aeson Dantis, Communications Head for Sen. Pia Cayetano; Angeline Bernal-Samson, sister of Salvador Bernal, and Mariano Aguinaldo, a former student of Edades.
Cayetano allocated P50 million for the construction of the cultural center and museum. The lot on where the project will stand was donated by the family of Mayor Fernandez to the city government specifically for the project intended to promote culture, the arts, and creative industries in the local community.
The cultural center will be a joint venture between the Dagupan City government and the NCCA, in collaboration with relevant cultural and academic agencies as well as the private sector. All aspects of the museum’s governance, operations, and development will be determined through mutual agreement within one year of the law’s enactment. (Leonardo Micua)
