‘Watchtower’ marks 75 years of translation in Pangasinan
THE Watchtower, a Bible-based publication produced by Jehovah’s Witnesses, marks 75 years of translation into the Pangasinan language.
With 42 million copies per issue, has the largest circulation among printed magazines in the world.
The English version of the magazine was first introduced in the Philippines by Jehovah’s Witnesses, who began sharing messages from the Bible in the early 1900s. However, Witnesses soon saw the need to produce magazines in local languages to better reach those in the community.
In April 1949, the magazine Say Panagbantayan, the Pangasinan translation of The Watchtower, became available to the public.
The translation work was not without challenges. Juan Landicho, one of the translators residing in Pangasinan, related the situation he and his fellow volunteers faced.
“At first, the Pangasinan edition of The Watchtower was released six months after the English version due to delays in translation. We were so excited when, in 1986, improvements in translation methods allowed for the English and Pangasinan editions to be released simultaneously,” Landicho stated.
