Bani’s Pakwan Festival returns 3 years after pandemic

THE 2024 Pakwan Festival reeled-off in Bani town last January 27 with the holding ‘Tambol‘ and ‘Kudyapi’ competitions for the first time.

However, the main celebration of Bani’s Pakwan Festival will be on February 4 that will be highlighted by street dancing by dancers garbed in indigenous materials adorned with water melon motif.

This will mark Pakwan Festival’s return after it was suspended off for three years because of the pandemic. The festival was the brainchild of former mayor and now Vice Mayor Gwen Palafox-Yamamoto.

According to Bani Mayor Facundo Palafox, the main objective of the festival is to celebrate Bani’s abundant watermelon harvests.

Today, the water melon harvests in Bani averaged 2, 500 metric tons in the 125-hectare land that farmers planted in the previous planting season. Because of this, Bani has earned the moniker as Water Melon Capital of Pangasinan.

Mayor Palafox said the festival will feature competition activities such as watermelon cookfest, fruit carving, agricultural trade fair, street dance competition, battle of the bands, and mass watermelon eating contest. (Kim Gealogo)
