Carlos Bulosan’s enduring legacy honored
GOVERNOR Ramon “Monmon” Guico urged Pangasinenses to recognize the enduring legacy of Carlos Bulosan, a distinguished figure and source of pride for the province during the opening program of the 2nd International Conference on Pangasinan and Bulosan Studies, held from November 27-30, at the Sison Auditorium in Lingayen on the occasion of his 110th birth anniversary.
Bulosan, a renowned novelist-poet from Binalonan town, was most celebrated for his work “America is in the Heart,” shedding light on the harsh living conditions faced by Filipino immigrants in the United States.
Governor Guico, represented by his special assistant, lawyer Ronn Castillo, emphasized Bulosan’s literary excellence, forged through his advocacy for social justice.
Guico cited how Bulosan’s impact transcends time, leaving an indelible mark on the global stage. The conference, themed “Expanding the Frontiers of Knowledge on Pangasinan,” serves as a platform for sharing scholarly and creative works related to Pangasinan.
University of the Philippines President Angelo Jimenez, represented by UP Professor Raymundo Rovillos, said the conference’s exploration of Bulosan’s hometown, Binalonan, was a heartwarming homecoming and a tribute to the enduring stories that encapsulate persistence, resilience, and humor in the face of adversity.
Dr. Perla Legaspi, head of the Center for Pangasinan Studies that organized the event,
said the conference received 145 paper abstracts covering diverse topics such as history, language, culture, economics, political and social development, health education, and science and environment. The wealth of contributions reflects the vibrant and comprehensive exploration of Pangasinan and Bulosan studies at the international level, she added. (Eva Visperas)
