Jayceekens observe celebration of Indigenous People’s Month
IN keeping with Dagupan Jayceeken’s cultural heritage advocacy, the group trooped to the northern town of Sison, Pangasinan to observe the town’s Indigenous People’s Month celebration held October 26 upon the initiative of Mayor Danny Uy.
The celebration started off with the ritual slaughter of a pig, followed by the program highlighted by the performance of traditional cultural customs by the indigenous youth.
Sison is one of the towns in Pangasinan that has large indigenous enclaves—a cross mix of Igorot and Ilocano ethnic groups. According to Executive Assistant and concurrent Cultural Officer Daniel Uy, 17 of its 28 barangays have indigenous population. They are represented in the Sangguniang Bayan by 84-year old former teacher Dionisia Sidayen under the official designation of Indigenous People’s Mandatory Representative.
The IPM is based on “7722, otherwise known as the “Higher Education Act of 1994, and pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1906” that declared the month of October as the National Indigenous Peoples (IP) Month “in recognition and protection of the rights of Indigenous Cultural Communities”.
The Jayceeken delegation was led by President Jigs Seen, past Presidents, Asterio Fernandez, Ernesto Go; Atty Manuel Aoanan, Engr. Gabby Zabala, Ernie Dispo, Noel Santillan, Bernadette Quijada, Marife Vinluan and PUNCH columnist Rex Catubig.
They were warmly welcomed by IPM representative Sidayen and Sison Cultural Officer, Daniel Uy. (Julie Ann Arrogante)
