BASISTA, known for its tagline “Where Fine Music Begins” because of its great orchestras, intends to assign one day every year for its Orchestra Festival to sustain the cultural heritage of the town.

A municipal ordinance instituting the activity was passed and is undergoing review by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

“The music brought by the orchestras in the town and the love for music by the townspeople has become undoubtedly a way of culture as it has been an intrinsic part of gatherings, festivals and beliefs,” said the ordinance authored by Councilor Jake Niccole Perez.

For several decades now, the town of Basista has been known for its great orchestras playing in several towns/cities in and out of the province of Pangasinan.

The annual town fiesta of Basista is celebrated in the month of March and the local government intends to assign one day for the orchestra festival, hence the ordinance.

It also said that the orchestras of Basista are part of the culture that reflects and shapes values, beliefs, and ideals, thereby defining a person’s identity. The Basista culture that reflects and shapes the economic, social, and political life of the people must be developed, promoted, and preserved, it said.

It also mentioned that the orchestra composed of town artists plays an important role in the continued development and advancement of Basista.

The Orchestra Festival will be held every 3rd Friday of March during the celebration of the annual town fiesta and a minimum P800,000 will be allocated annually under the General Fund of the municipality for the implementation of the ordinance. (Eva Visperas)
