Speaker Eugenio Perez honored for city’s 75th foundation
BETTER late than never.
This was underscored by newly sworn in Mayor Belen Fernandez when she led a wreath-laying ceremony in the morning of June 30 at the statue of the late Speaker Eugenio Perez to belatedly honor him for authoring Republic Act No, 170 that changed Dagupan’s status from a municipality of Pangasinan to a chartered city separate from the province.
The move was to make up for the failure of the past city administration of then Mayor Brian Lim to celebrate the diamond jubilee or 75th year of Dagupan cityhood on June 20, a day declared by Malacanang as an official public holiday in the city.
The outgoing city administration did not hold any appropriate activity to celebrate Dagupan’s jubilee year except by distributing anniversary bonus of P3,000 each to officials and employees of the city government two days before Lim finally bowed out of office.
Fernandez said an executive order will be issued for the creation of an executive committee to plan and implement Dagupan City’s jubilee celebration that will last till June 19, 2023.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Dagupan cityhood, the city will recall and cite the gains made by the city throughout the past 7 decades as a chartered city, the only one in Region 1, that should serve as a reminder to today’s youth how it had grown since June 20, 1947, she said.
Accompanying Fernandez in the simple wreath-laying ceremony were Vice Mayor Bryan Kua, Councilor Michael Fernandez, Liga ng mga Barangay president Marcelino Fernandez, Herero-Perez Barangay Kapitan Salvacion Bravo and P/Lt. Colonel Romil Avenido, newly designated OIC of the Dagupan City Police. (Leonardo Micua)
