Bonuan Boquig NHS, among top10 finalists in world school model tilt
THE Bonuan Boquig National High School (BBNHS) is gaining world recognition and praise after it was cited as a finalist for the “Top 10 Shortlisted Schools for the World’s Best School” award by a global education organization.
The World’s Best School Prize was launched in 2022 by T4 Education (T4), a global education organization in partnership with Yayasan Hasanah, Templeton World Charity Foundation, Accenture, and American Express.
T4 Education is a global community formed during the COVID-19 pandemic that sought to assist teachers and schools navigate the new normal and generally improve education for all individuals.
BBNHS and the G.L. David Memorial Integrated School in Balanga City, Bataan, are finalists in the World’s Best School Prize for Environmental Action World’s Best School Prize for Community Collaboration, while Malitbog National High School in Calinog, Iloilo, is a finalist for the World’s Best School Prize for Supporting Healthy Lives.
The contest seeks to feature the winning schools’ best practices for others to emulate and more than 1,000 schools presented their programs.
The school’s profile on the T4 Education website cited the time when Typhoon Pepeng hit the city in 2009 that left much of Dagupan City submerged in flood water, “BBNHS took action to support its students and save the local environment. Mobilizing thousands of volunteers, the school planted mangroves and provided new habitats and shelter for fish,”.
In 2014, the school initiated the International Coastal Clean-up clearing the shorelines of Bonuan Beach and segregated the garbage collected and recyclable materials were upcycled as garden pots and decorations. Volunteers also planted trees to rehabilitate a local dump site.
Renato Santillan, BBNHS principal, is overjoyed at the news. “This is the first time our school gained worldwide recognition”, he said in an interview. “Nag iisip tayo ng programs na makakatulong sa public and to our learners”, he added.
Since Dagupan City is a flood-prone area, the BBNHS made it its mantra to act on the call to safeguard the environment and cited the school’s tree planting program and clean-up drive in the city’s rivers since 2010.
He said a five-year plan was submitted that included a mangrove nursery and environmental research for sustainability.
Santillan revealed the school’s officials are being interviewed by the event organizers for the selection of the “Top 3” schools.
The Top 3 schools in the World’s Best School Prize will be known in October this year. (Ahikam Pasion/ PIA Pangasinan)
