COMMISSION on Higher Education chairman Prospero  de Vera urged the new Universidad de Dagupan (UdD) to aim for internationalization and become among the best universities not only in the Philippines but in Asia if not the world.

De Vera challenged the newest university in Pangasinan to be active in the push towards internationalization during the investiture and the installation of Dr. Voltaire Arzadon as UdD ‘s first president, last March 18 at the university hall and gymnasium in Bonuan Binloc,

“You must now benchmark yourselves with the other universities not just in the Philippines but in the (Asian) region because the grant of university status now opens a lot of possibilities to further expand and internationalize,” De Vera told the audience that included the UdD board, members of the faculty, officials and students.

UdD, formerly Colegio de Dagupan, was awarded university status per CHEd en banc Resolution No. 742-2021 dated April 14, 2021.

De Vera said CHEd has been assisting public and private schools get international ranking by helping them understand the criteria needed for international status, and cited the number of Philippine universities considered and ranked as among the best in Asia increased from four to 15 during his watch.

“We are serious about our efforts in internationalization. And we are ready to assist universities being transformed outside their political boundaries,” De Vera stressed.

Specifically, he invited UdD to maximize opportunities available at CHEd which, he added, invested very heavily on faculty development.

The Commission’s SIKAP grants are the best in the country, the best in terms of financial benefits and the best in total amount invested and had allocated more than one billion pesos to help faculty members in higher educational institutions complete their graduate studies, De Vera added.

De Vera congratulated Arzadon for converting the former CdD into a university.

“I am aware for instance that Colegio de Dagupan has received various meritorious awards and citations not just performance in essential tests but from CHEd and other accredited agencies, including getting de-regulated status, being a center of development in information technology, center of development in teachers education, best performing school for various years and had produced topnotchers in licensure tests,” he said.  (Butch Uka)
