A BUSINESSMAN-philanthropist in Asingan funded the construction of a new multi-purpose building for senior citizens in the town.

The completed two-storey building was turned over on Oct. 8 by the donor, Alex Tanwangco, to the local government led by Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr, as his way of honoring his late mother, Nanay Vering.

“I’m dedicating this building to her, to immortalize her memory and my sister Helen would agree with me that our mother Virginia is very instrumental in molding us,” Tanwangco said.

He said this is their first project in collaboration with the mayor, with the support of Councilor Johnymar Carig.

“This is just the beginning of our services to senior citizens like me, so I hope that everybody will benefit so that we can live a healthy and longer life.” Tanwangco added.

Inside the building is a clinic for the medical needs of the elderly.

The 73-year-old businessman said they will also establish projects for youth education that will cater to indigent students.

“We would put up classes somewhere in Angela area, we will put up classrooms to handle the education of the indigent. Marami dyan ang indigent na matatalino na, sayang naman kung hindi natin ma-harvest.” Tanwangco said.

He also plans to put up a rice mill that will also buy farmers’ palay at better prices.

Tanwangco also lauded the unity among local officials in Asingan which he said is a key to achieving progress.

For his part, Mayor Lopez thanked the residents who are providing services for the town’s elderly.

“It was a challenge for all of us on how could we start this noble project for the senior citizens. Because of the unity of all the people of Asingan, this dream of ours came into reality,” Lopez said.

Vice Mayor Heidee Chua said someday this will not only be the project that will rise in the town for as long as there is unity.

If there is unity, Chua said not only will the senior citizens benefit but also other sectors of the municipality as well. (Eva Visperas)
