San Carleñian student turns old shirts into art pieces

DO you have clothes that are too worn out to wear or unwanted shirts because of stains?

Well, a 20-year-old student in San Carlos City has the solution to make it wearable again.

Prince-Vester Canilang Relayosa, an incoming third year student at the Pangasinan State University-Bayambang campus, has learned to recreate old shirts into smart shirts with his “art-bleaching”.

Relayosa told The PUNCH, he learned to customize old shirts as a hobby and to kill time  under the “new normal”.

He said he was initially inspired by a feature on Tiktok about tie-dying that he watched and started experimenting with his own clothes. Among other things, he soon learned that bleach works on black shirts as well.

Relayosa added his past exposure and experience at drawing portraits with dormmates when he was still a freshman, became useful to his art-bleached business. He said when the pandemic began, he started earning initially by accepting commissions on portrait drawing from his friends and referrals.

So after he started bleaching t-shirts with color designs, he realized he could put his newfound talent in portrait drawing into good use as well. After several trials, he was confident he had a product and service to sell.

Relayosa said he is now open to accept bleach shirt projects from P500 up to P1,500 depending on the details of the picture.

He cited the portrait bleaching art of the American professional basketball player Derrick Rose and the ‘Greek Freak’ Giannis Antetokoumpo that took him eight hours each to finish.

He is hopeful he can earn and save enough for him soon to buy a laptop he can use for his online classes and pay for other needs in college.

Meanwhile, he encourages aspiring artists to pursue their dreams by discovering their innate talents and be good at it through constant practice.

For project inquiries about desired artwork on their t-shirts, he can be reached through his Facebook account. (Jerick Pasiliao)
