THE Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan has announced a new award program in honor of its former archbishop, Oscar V. Cruz, a year after his death.

CRUZ

Cruz, known for his crusade against illegal gambling, particularly jueteng, as well as graft and corruption, served the archdiocese for 18 years until his retirement in 2009.

The former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) died of complications of COVID-19 on Aug. 26 last year at the age of 85.

“The nation needs heroes. Our youth need role models,” said Cruz’s successor, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, in a statement from the CBCP News website.

The “Gawad Asin tan Silew Oscar V. Cruz Award” honors the values embodied “by contemporary saints such as him”, Villegas said.

“The award will recognize persons or institutions whose works teach the path of justice and righteousness, of truth and goodness, with joy and hope and with holy anger tempered by love and contagious courage,” Villegas said.

The nominations are ongoing until Oct. 21, 2021. The awarding rites will be held on Nov. 17, Cruz’s birthday.

Details of the overview of the award, nomination of awardee, selection process, selection committee, can be accessed at the CBCPNews website. (Eva Visperas)
