FIRSTLY, the talk of Philippine sports these days is about the stunning “positive” doping test result of our naturalized player, Gilas Pilipinas 5 guard-forward Justin Brownlee in the Hangzhou Asian Games where our country seized the elusive gold medal, our first after 61 years.

As expected, the president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), headed by Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, was quick to point out that despite the positivity of Brownlee’s test results using the prohibited substance called “Carboxy THC,” Brownlee can still contest the result of his “A Sample” until October 19. Luckily, according to Tolentino, it will not affect Gilas Pilipinas 5’s celebrated victory as mandated by rules citing Article 11.2 of the Anti-Doping Rule of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The worst scenario that might happen to Brownlee is a two-year suspension by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and his participation in the upcoming PBA tournament is also in jeopardy. The three-time PBA Best Import is currently on vacation in the United States for a ten-day visit and will return to the Philippines before the PBA opens next month. Let’s just wait and see.
