Calasiao cycling results
By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.
FIRSTLY, my heartfelt congratulations to the top five podium finishers in the province’s latest cycling road race held last May 6 in conjunction with the May 1 to 7 Calasiao town fiesta celebration. Dubbed as “First Calasiao Mayor Kevin Roy Cup Cycling Challenge,” the short 48.6 kilometers bikefest that passed the areas of Sta. Barbara and Mapandan (twice), Mangaldan, San Jacinto, Manaoag and Urdaneta City, was done in two categories and exclusively for 50 participants from Calasiao and Metro Dagupan Cycling Club (MDCC) directed by the town fiesta cycling event chairman Engr. Rodolfo “Boy” Dion.
All the top 20 finishers in the 59 years old category were awarded cash prizes but only the top ten best were given medal each while the top five were given the privilege to stand at the victory stand and received all their mandated rewards.
Pangasinan’s new cycling hope Kenneth Maramba of Dagupan City topped the event outsprinting his breakaway partner Vanjoe Calimlim in the last 200 meters of barangay Buenlag, Calasiao clocking the distance in one hour, 12 minutes, 43 seconds. The duo received P5,000 and P3,000 cash, respectively. Third was another Buenlag, Calasiao native Marc Maminta, good for P2,000 while Ramraj Carreon of Nagsaing, Calasiao received P1,000 and MDCC rider Sherwin Carrera, P700. In the senior division, the top five podium finishers were Ariel Soriano of Pelay, Calasiao, champion( P3,000) while Dextro Escat and Jimmy Cayabyab both MDCC members finished second and third and received P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, while Reynaldo Castillo of Buenlag, Calasiao landed fourth and Engr. Rodolfo Dion was fifth, good for P700.00 and P500.00, in that order.
It was a successful event with no untoward incident happened and my huge thanks to God. Thanks too to Mayor Kevin Roy Macanlalay and his staff led his executive assistant III Meggie Cruz and also my race officials. Mayor Macanlalay in his speech before he flagged off of the participants said that a second Calasiao bikefest under his leadership is in the offing in this year’s Puto Festival in December. Yes, but with different route, though with similar format.
Honestly, the May 6 event was my 248th directed cycling road event in my life starting on March 7, 1974 held in my town Mangaldan during our town fiesta celebration under the leadership then of the late town chief executive Atty. Macario G. Ydia. The event was participated in by big guns in Philippine cycling won by Urdaneta, Pangasinan born Wencelmo Baguio, my former teammate during the ten-day 1973 Tour of Luzon.

A second cycling event this month will be held on May 14. According to my son, Jazy, who was officially assigned to direct the event, the bikefest will be dubbed “First Pangasinan 4th District Cycling Challenge 2023” and will be sponsored by Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia. Jazy said cash prizes, trophies and medals are up for grabs for the top 20 finishers, with the champion to receive P15k, P10k for the first runner-up, P8k for second runner-up, plus trophy apiece. Fourth placer will receive P6k, while P4k for fifth and 6th to 10th placers good for P1k each. Fourth to 10 placers will be awarded medal one each while 11th to 20th finishers will receive P5h apiece. Jazy said the start-finish is San Fabian via Mangaldan, Dagupan City, back to San Fabian via barangays Bonuan, San Jacinto, Manaoag, and twice back to San Jacinto, Mangaldan, San Fabian with an approximate distance of 95 kilometers.
See you there.
