May elections will be a flashpoint
By Gonzalo Duque
FOLLOWING the recent concern expressed by no less than President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. about the hearings going on in the House of Representatives that seemed to be leading to the eventual impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, the probe is now likely to be stopped because it is causing a lot of distractions on the efforts of our leaders to address the real problems of the nation.
Well and good!
But I do not know if the QuadCom will actually stop their endless circus because I hear it from reliable sources that Speaker Martin Romualdez would like to have Sara impeached before Donald Trump assumes the presidency of the United States on January 20, 2025.
It will be a big mistake if the BBM administration will not be able to control the situation.
As I see it, our people are getting impatient with the current state of our nation — unmitigated graft and corruption, the return of the drug menace, breakdown of peace and order, continuing violation of the constitutional rights of those invited to appear in the House of Representatives as resource speakers, and the sufferings of our people brought about by the many typhoons that have adversely affected our economy.
If we try to look at the engagement of VP Sara against that of President Marcos, we could easily conclude that the popularity of the President is continuously plummeting. This is not good for his administration.
The continuing attack on VP Sara is making her a martyr.
On this score, I believe that former President Digong Duterte’s popularity among our people remains a factor in the current play of words and guts by our leaders.
The only way the situation could be salvaged is the forthcoming election where the administration could use all its resources to make all its candidates win.
As far as the Philippine setting is concerned, elections, like religion, “is the opium of the people.”

In Mangaldan, the mayoralty race is turning out to be an exciting fight.
The incumbent mayor, Bona Fe De Vera-Parayno, was endorsed by Gov. Ramon Guico III while her opponent, Marilyn de Guzman-Lambino, mother of Guico’s running-mate, Vice Governor Mark Ronald Lambino, had not been endorsed by the governor.
Guico’s running-mate in the provincial election is the son of Raul and Marilyn Lambino. Everybody knows, Raul is the lone Pangasinense running for senator of the republic.
A third wannabe is the present vice mayor, Dr. Stephen de Venecia Mejia, the son of our Region 1 Medical Center director, Roland Mejia. I am guessing that Dr. Mejia will be the candidate of Gina de Venecia, who wants to fill up the post to be vacated by her son, Christopher.
Masaya ito! Bakit ganon? This seems to have become a complicated matter.
The governor endorsed Bona despite knowing that the incumbent Mangaldan mayor is a relative by affinity of former Governor Amado Espino Jr.
Is Guico preventing Bona from supporting Pogi Espino, who is seeking to retake from him his old seat in the provincial capitol? Does he not know that blood is thicker than water?

I have asked some people about the chances of Celia Lim beating Mayor Belen Fernandez in the 2025 election, and Brian Lim emerging as the vice mayor of Dagupan City at the expense of Vice Mayor Bryan Kua.
We were surprised to find out that Celia can possibly beat Belen while Brian can also emerge victorious against VM Kua.
I asked the supporters of Celia and Brian: How could this be possible?
I told their supporters that Belen Fernandez and Bryan Kua have managed the affairs of Dagupan City well, especially VM Bryan, who has been tirelessly going around the city handshaking with his constituents.
I am sure that Mayor Belen has given him a lot of funding for his projects. And so with Mayor Belen, whose programs and projects can no longer be stopped by the “majority” councilors.
But all of a sudden, my caregiver woke me up and told me I was having a nightmare.
Ha, ha, ha! Panaginip lang pala yon. Akala ko totoo!
