Arenas Boulevard: Calasiao’s new landmark of progress
By Eva C. Visperas
THE newly-constructed Arenas Boulevard in Barangay Bued, Calasiao town, has quickly become a hub of activity, especially after sunset.
For the past few months, this scenic boulevard still largely unused has drawn in crowds eager to enjoy a variety of activities: walking, jogging, and even dining in the array of food stalls that line the street.
For many residents, it’s not just a place for physical exercise but a go-to spot to unwind and catch up with friends and family. The boulevard’s vibrant atmosphere has also contributed significantly to the town’s night economy, giving vendors an opportunity to thrive as they cater to the growing crowd every evening.
Not only has Arenas Boulevard become a social and recreational center, but it will also introduce a shortcut for motorists, especially those traveling to Mangaldan, once that part is finished. This new access route promises a much-needed solution to the area’s traffic congestion, offering a faster way to navigate these two districts.
However, as with all major changes, the boulevard’s newfound popularity has come with its own set of challenges. The beauty and convenience it brings are, unfortunately marred by a dark side — the rise of car and motorcycle drag racing.
A number of young men have taken to the open road after dark, using the stretch of Arenas Boulevard for dangerous high-speed races. Tragically, several accidents have already resulted in injuries and, in some instances, even deaths. This alarming trend has captured the attention of local media, with radio commentators discussing the issue, and netizens flooding social media with videos and pictures of the tragic incidents.
When Third District Rep. Rachel Arenas first learned about the growing concern over drag racing on the boulevard, she expressed her deep worry. As a frequent visitor in the area, she, too, has enjoyed the food stalls, often unwinding after a long day of work.
It’s a place where she finds comfort, just like many of the locals who now see the boulevard as a place of leisure and a symbol of the town’s progress. But when the issues of reckless driving and unsafe conditions were brought to her attention, Congresswoman Arenas wasted no time in reaching out to the barangay and town officials. She has called for immediate action to address the dangers posed by these illegal activities.
For her, it’s crucial that the benefits of the boulevard be safeguarded by ensuring that safety measures are put in place to protect the residents and visitors who frequent the area. She urged local officials to work closely with the police to increase patrols and implement stricter enforcement against drag racing. It’s clear that she is not only committed to the boulevard’s development but also to the wellbeing of the community.
The municipal government already took action on these unfortunate events. Local officials, the police and barangay authorities, already responded swiftly by putting safety measures in place. The involvement of Congresswoman Arenas, who tirelessly sourced funding for the boulevard’s construction, also ensures that this matter is taken seriously. She has long been committed to improving road infrastructure and providing better access to the people of her district, all while aiming to boost the local economy.
While the boulevard has opened up new opportunities for businesses and recreational activities, for her safety must always come first. The community, along with local government units, must work hand in hand to ensure that the boulevard remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.
This can be achieved by strict enforcement against drag racing and installing road safety barriers, especially with the construction at the Mangaldan side yet to be finished. It’s also crucial for the public to be more aware of the risks associated with street racing and to take a collective stand in promoting a safer environment for all.
Arenas Boulevard has proven to be a valuable asset for the people of Calasiao, contributing to the growth of the local economy and providing a much-needed outlet for leisure and fitness. Its success should not be overshadowed by being used as a venue for illegal and dangerous activities.
