Hey, what are you doing in my dream?

IN the Bible, dreams are regarded as a form of direct spiritual communication, between God and man, or between an angel, upon instructions from God, and a human being.

In Matthew 1:18-25, an angel appears to Joseph in his dream, telling him not to fear in taking Mary as his wife saying: Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Sigmund Freud thought dreams are repressed content, ideas or themes. Carl Jung propounded the idea that dreams come from a collective unconscious, something passed on from generation to generation beginning from our most ancient ancestors. Several other psychologists and scientists presented their theories, but up to now, dream interpretation is still a mystery. Dr. Michelle Drerup, a medical doctor contends, Theres no real consistent, scientifically proven theory linking specific content back to what a dream means.”

Alongside the scientific investigations, dream interpreters proliferated, some online. However, there is no guarantee that an interpretation is correct, given the fact that dreams are very personal, and that interpretations are better if the dreamer is involved in the interpretation of her dreams. No interpreter has ever actually been inside anybody’s mind while dreaming, to be able to say for sure that the interpretation is valid.

Some psychologists believe that the meaning a dreamer ascribes to her own dream is much more meaningful than anyone else’s analysis. After all, most dreams reflect personal experiences and the emotions that accompany them.

A friend told me, “I have this recurrent dream of my deceased husband running after me, and I keep running and running, and when I stop, his face pops in front of me, and I run again. I keep running until I’m out of breath, and I wake up, still catching my breath.”

Her latest episode was triggered by an interview with Marjorie Barreto relating how she suffered hearing loss while married to Dennis Padilla, allegedly a wife-beater. Listening to Marjorie made her relive her trauma in the hands of her husband who terrorized her with a hunting knife, whenever she refused to make love to him.

“I don’t want him in my dreams but he appears, grinning, with alcohol in one hand and a hunting knife on the other.”

To distract her, I asked: “What was the color of his shirt, his pants, his shoes?”

“He was wearing a white sando (shirt), loose khaki shorts, and his shoes . . .  he was not wearing shoes, he was running barefoot without getting hurt!”

So vividly she remembered, like it was real, which made her tremble every time she sees a man resembling her husband on the street. There was a time she stepped on the gas at a red light to avoid him. It didn’t matter that he was already very dead, reduced into dust particles without a green bone. He was a ghost that refuses to exit.

So what is he doing in her dreams where he is not wanted? By the way, she did try to poison him.
