Sanctuaries
By Virginia Jasmin Pasalo
PLACES of refuge and safety can be found in special places in the mind, as well as spaces where we experience peace and renewal. Mine is both in my mind, the vast silence of the atmosphere, the energy of a forest bath, and little corners in my immediate environment.
Past the thorns
there, at the point of the river
where it kisses the shore
I shall take a boat, or swim
with the current
past these thorns, to an estuary
where fresh water goes to bed
with the salt of the sea
there, surrounded by the reefs
the rhythm of the fishes
and the song of the birds,
we can explore the sound
of our bodies, crushing
in symphony with the snores
of sleeping seashells
and the heartbeat of river stones
Little corners
this corner, by the stairs
looks out to a sea of grasses
tall reeds that grow so fast
with very little rain
faster than I could claim
the space to plant little seeds
I truly desire
from the inside, they are,
beautiful, so fresh and green
the green that soothes red eyes
pierced by the sands of time
assault of grim realities
untamed passions
overwhelming still
raw, vulnerable, hurting
it is enough to sit and stare
and feel, momentary peace
keep the balance, gain strength
and again, ready these hands
resolve to pull out some reeds
recover space for the seeds
make them grow
make me grow
from this corner, by the stairs
