Jugglers

A good friend of mine, Minello Saporito, posted on his FB timeline, “The jugglers were at the King’s court and they made the courtesans burst with laughter. In what way? They, that were crippled, ugly and hump-headed, mocked normal people.”

Most people seem to get joy from the misery of others. Humans have not advanced a bit to being humane, from the time of kings and tyrants to this era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Or is that proclivity innate in being human? If at all, the technology exacerbated it, providing means to amplify the malice and the hate, spreading very quickly, exponentially, in the speed of light.

Being humane is different from being human. Humane means “showing compassion or benevolence”. It is a learning experience meant to have “a civilizing or refining effect on people”. It is like a finishing school for empathy, clarity and the finer things people can be.

We have lost being humane as a specie, fools who sell their souls to the cunning and entrust their future to the senility of a fascist. Animals have more compassion, they learn from past mistakes, and they devour those who have eaten their kind. They exact  retribution.

The memes on Facebook nowadays are full of people deriving joy from the disability and weakness in others. The jugglers, the crippled, the hump-headed, these people are not ugly. People who delight in their “ugliness” are ugly.

Tell me

You feed through a silver spoon

he spoons, with his mouth

having no arms, swiped by a speeding car

while begging in a busy intersection

in between stop lights

tell me, are you better

having spooned the coffers of government

depositing offshore, funds

meant to keep him off the streets?

You, who stole his name to vote

because he could no longer write

or many times, had gone through death?

You, who paid for foreign doctors

and took stem cell therapy

to keep your knees from wobbling

and your face from sagging

and to keep “it” up

You, juggle in front of me

tell me, of the beautiful and the happy,

show me the stash of gold bars

that could topple the economy of a superpower,

and put a toppled dynasty, back into power

tell me, you, pathetic buffoon

so I too, can LOL!
