Athletics and politics don’t mix
By Gonzalo Duque

By the time you are reading this, the PRISAA games would have been over.  Thank God, it’s over? No, I wish the games were still here. We enjoyed every minute of it. And I must thank everyone û from Speaker Joe de V to the last man in my staff who chipped in to make it a big slambang success.

Thank you, thank you.

Now, my staff, them who stood by me through thick and thin, Phil Celi, Art Tangco, Seato Gonimil, Bert Zipagan, everyone!

How can I thank you all?

One of these days, we’ll drink all the truckloads of beer in the world. I’m very pleased you were with me and I with you.  Parang kanta yon a. I must thank the Lord, too, over and above in fact, for making our hosting a success.

Are there any negative reaction? So far, we have not received any.

President GMA was happy when she opened the games.  She urged the athletes to go Olympian, bring home the gold! She said. I must echo her call. We have proven it several times.  We were champions in the Sea games. Manny Pacquiao remains our inspiration and boxing icon.

Thank you, Madam President, for pitching for us in the private schools. She said the voucher system would enable graduates of the public high schools to enroll in the private colleges and universities. Let’s go for it.

It’s but fair because we in the private schools don’t enjoy government subsidy. We bite the bullet, we go through tough challenges to survive, come rain, come shine, and when we increase our tuition a little bit, we get criticized. Maawa naman kayo.

But we are not complaining. We only need understanding. We are all right.  We can do it. Di ba, Chito? Yes, we can!

We have done it, and we are still ready and willing to host another big, national or even international event. We have faith; we have the Lord with us. So how can we fail?

Next time, we’d even do much better, because we are learning. We are still young and willing to learn new ropes. Thanks to the internet, the networking strategies, your faith, the hospitality, the will power and the willingness to shoulder responsibilities.

There’s something I discovered from the audience when I spoke at the opening rites. When I said let’s play fair and square and not be like the politicians, everybody applauded.

Mukhang masama na image ng mga pulitiko, ano po?

That’s why I pity Manny Pacquiao for entertaining the idea of going to politics. It’s not good. Ok  na sana image niya na sport icon, medyo nasisilaw ng politica. Ano ba yan, igan?

Even  the chicks have started to corner Manny against the ropes, he he.

Well, that’s the story of life. If you are   sikat, many will crowd on you. Kaya kung minsan ayaw ko nang  maging sikat e, kaya lang, I can’t  help it, right, Phil?

I park my pen with the hope that we have done our best, and rest assured that in some future date, we shall meet again and embark on a similar fruitful and memorable adventure. I don’t want to do anything now, I just want to relax and treasure every moment of a successful and meaningful affair.

Thank you all and regards!
