Humor among lawyers

NOVEMBER 30 – celebrity Kathryn Bernardo confirms her break-up from actor Daniel Padilla. I didn’t expect that this news will explode on Philippine social media to epic proportions. Almost every scroll of my Facebook wall yielded posts about this unexpected separation.  Group chats (GC) and X.com were also busy with stories on these two actors who allegedly had been together for eleven long years. My brother, who is ignorant about Philippine show business personalities, was amazed that this so-called KathrynDaniel or Kathniel split is now discussed even among intellectual groups.

Typical of Filipinos is to humor themselves about their sad reality.  There are even amusing memes that the break-up has caused the cancellation of classes to give time for fans to grieve and heal.

I wish to share this funny thread in a lawyers’ group chat where I am a member.   One female attorney expressed that she didn’t want to be carried away by the adulation of many to the love team of Kathniel. She revealed that she had to shield herself from anguish after the AlDub split which took her a long time to recover from.  She conveyed that she didn’t want to experience a similar trauma of a fan again.

Trauma of a fan’s heartbreak?

Let’s give it context. AlDUB is portmanteau of the character of two artists Alden Richards and YayaDub (Maine Mendoza) whose fan base was phenomenally huge, so massive that Philippine Arena was not enough to contain their devoted followers during a show they held there. Unlike Kathniel who were real lovers, the two protagonists in the AlDub team were merely selling the idea that they were into each other.  Two to three years later, while still at the pinnacle of their popularity, the female counterpart of the AlDub team squealed that her tandem with Alden was for show.  She later confessed her real romantic relationship with another, thus disappointing their multitude of fans.

Amazed by how fans can be so emotionally involved in support of their idols, another female lawyer in that GC was reminded of a legislator’s silly bill that penalizes ghosting. She jokingly suggested that another bill entitled, “Regulating Loveteams for the Protection of the Mental Health of their Fans” should also be filed in Congress. She highlighted that among the proposed prohibited acts should be the creation of hyperrealism in the minds of fans that their chosen love teams are real-life lovers as well as prolonging the existence of loveteams for more than three years.

In the same GC, another lawyer shared Daniel’s public statement regarding his failed relationship with Kathryn. The attorney highlighted two to three statements and spotted inconsistences.  He commented that the last pronouncement about Daniel’s forever love for Kathryn is not germane to a split.  Another legal mind butted in and said that since the declaration of Daniel’s undying love for Kathryn is placed at the end of the statement, then he is opening himself to a possible reconciliation.  “If he is not sincere, then he is being just a selfish tease. He is not helping Kathryn to move on,” commented the same attorney.

Another erudite from the GC suggested that the public statement should have just followed the pattern in court decisions.  He said Daniel should have written, “Wherefore, premises considered, our relationship must come to an end.  Let us return the properties given to each other and restore our singlehood.”  Sometimes, a cold and nonchalant delivery of the separation may be cruel.  To a certain extent, cruelty could be kindness especially as regards helping the former other half to move on.

It is hilarious that sometimes lawyers do engage in showbiz topics but they cannot keep their legal swing from swinging. #
