ADDING to the already impressive roster of the College of Law faculty at the Lyceum-Northwestern University is a line-up of incoming professors with stellar credentials which match those in the so-called Big Five universities in Manila.  I am pleased that it did not take a lot to persuade these lawyers to teach in our small college.

Human rights lawyer and environmentalist,  Atty. Cheryl Daytec-Yangot, of the cancelled Sting concert fame, is joining us.  She is presently a Philippine Labor Attaché based in Geneva who proclaims that teaching is her passion.  It may sound cliche to us but statements like this, when coupled with action, are not common.  She has a Master of Laws from the Central European University and has many years of experience teaching law at the St. Louis University.

Harvard University Master of Laws graduate, Atty. Rory Lambino-Torres, is a fellow Iska (short for UP Iskolars ng Bayan) and a fellow Goosian graduate!  Like me, she graduated from Mother Goose Special Science High School.  Although she is steeped with teaching load at the De la Salle University College of Law, she agreed to teach at the L-NU.  What with our common schools and our fathers – Dean Hermogenes Decano and Atty. Raul Lambino – who taught in the same law school before, she readily said yes to my invitation.

CPA-Lawyer Eloisa H. Manlansing, who also has roots in Pangasinan, is in the private practice of law.  She was the former Philippine Legal Counsel of the UK-based Standard Chartered Bank and has worked for two of the Big Four accounting firms worldwide.  She has a Master of Laws in International Business from the American University in Washington, DC.  She is another Iska lawyer and is a DLSU green archer who finished first in her accounting graduating class.

Aside from presiding in courts, Judge Gerely Rico-Cruz is presently teaching at the University of the Philippines College of Law.  She obtained her Bachelor of Laws and undergraduate degrees from the University of the Philippines. I am very happy that this feisty judge whose principles are so steadfast will spare us some of her precious time in order to educate provincial students.

Judge Hermielita M. Meneses worked as Court Attorney for almost a decade at the Court of Appeals before she became a member of the judiciary.  She is a graduate of San Beda College of Law and another fellow Goosian. This idealistic young member of the bench did not mince words when she approached me to offer her knowledge and expertise in teaching law at the L-NU.

Atty. Anna Regina C. Regalado is a 2019 graduate of the UP College of Law.  She has a BS Management degree from the Ateneo de Manila University and was connected to a top law firm in Manila before she became a Court Attorney of the Supreme Court where she is now presently connected.  I am waiting for this spitfire to spread her wings in the legal profession, in the same way her lawyer-parents are known for.

Last but not the least is one of my father’s favorite students at the University of Pangasinan College of Law, Atty. Jessa Joy C. Royupa, CPA.  She is presently Dagupan’s Budget Officer. Aside from her intelligence, she is known for her humor and musicality.  I am sure her fresh approach to teaching will be welcomed by the students.

They say, the College of Law faculty line-up this semester is a powerhouse.  The L-NU administration is hopeful that the many changes to be introduced during this coming semester, especially the access to quality education comparable to those available in the NCR, will bring in more students who are aiming to become excellent lawyers in the near future.

It is my hope the students can quickly make themselves as good conductors of knowledge and imbibe the teachings of their professors so that the so-called powerhouse can generate the “patriotic power” the country badly needs.
