Tim Orbos bats for sports in district

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

SPORTS buffs especially basketball fans knew Thomas “Tim” Orbos was the owner of the Pangasinan Presidents/Waves of the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA). Or perhaps the millennials only knew him as the former MMDA general manager or as the erstwhile Transportation Undersecretary. The good news is, he resigned recently from his latest post and filed his certificate of candidacy (CoC) to pursue his long time dream to be one of the six representatives of Pangasinan in the Lower House, representing the First District of our province.

Well, I met him again last October 17 at Pedrito’s Restaurant in Tapuac, Dagupan City after he filed his certificate of candidacy together with his supporters and admirers led by his wife Ditas, his father-in-law the former provincial chief executive Rafael Colet, his brother the former Governor Oscar Orbos, ex-Department of Justice (DoJ) Undersecretary Francisco “Toti” Baraan, some wannabe mayors of western Pangasinan and media people.

Despite his busy day, I still got the chance to engage him briefly in some small talk, after all I was the former commissioner of his Pangasinan Presidents/Waves. Aside from politics, we also talked about his sports plans in the First District if elected. He said if given the opportunity, he will organize a yearly inter-town basketball tourney in his district, as well as volleyball, lawn tennis, chess, cycling, to name some. In fact, he asked me to submit a proposal for a two-day bikefest that will be dubbed as “Tour de Primero Distrito” tentatively to be held in January next year. Of course, in my mind, the bikathon will traverse all the nine towns Sual, Bani, Anda, Bolinao, Agno, Burgos, Dasol, Infanta, Mabini and the lone city Alaminos. His hometown Bani will be one of the two starting points and the lap terminal. I hope the plan will push through.

The annual sportsfest “Pagalaw tan Ulopan ed Gobyerno Itanduro, on its third edition, kicked off last October 23 at Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen had our sports-minded Governor Amado “Pogi” I. Espino III delivering the inspirational message among the participants. Among the games held were basketball, volleyball, chess, tug-of-war, table tennis and badminton. Like last year, I watched two of the three basketball matches held in the morning after the opening ceremony that saw the Warriors headed by marquee player Roxar Melendez thumped the Medics to win by 11 points, 114-103 in the first game. Title contender Builders smothered Financers, 102-66 in the second match.
