I’m for Pacquiao

BY the time you read this piece, the national polls might still be in progress or perhaps already over. We all have our own choices of candidates for the lowest position in government (municipal councilor) to the highest level (president). That’s the basic and fundamental guarantee of democracy, our right of suffrage.

During the past days, mudslinging among the protagonists was rampant, most especially among the presidential candidates. That was the low point in our political exercise. But I’m sadder that no one among the presidential aspirants mentioned sports development as part of their respective platforms in the past their three debates and during their political sorties. Only youthful lawmaker Sen. Chiz Escudero, a vice presidentiable detailed his plans for sports in some of his sorties. Among the senatoriables, there was one and that came from our Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

Friday evening, April 29, I bumped into M.Y.T. , she with HRM degree. She was clearly anti-Pacquiao, and said she will never vote for Pacquiao because walang alam sa legislative work, but will surely vote for Duterte, her choice for the presidency. I didn’t argue with her and simply told her it’s her constitutional right, she can vote whoever she wants then our discussion focused on Pacquiao’s senatorial ambition. I explained to her that she got the wrong choice of words to say that Pacquiao ay walang alam sa congress because Pacman was already twice a congressman from Sarangani and already has an experience as lawmaker. I suggest that that the right description would be “kulang ng alam “ or little experience in the workings of the senate. I averred that Pacman brought huge honors to Philippines being the only boxer in the planet to win eight world crowns in different divisions (flyweight, super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and super welterweight), an achievement much more than what the two actors, Ramon Revilla Sr. and Lito Lapid could claim for themselves. They were elected but never-ever brought honor to our country. They were just playing scripted heroes in their movies. But the overweight fellow is myopic and insisted that the multi-champion Pacman is talagang walang alam. I told her to give him a try, a chance to perform in the senate and if he becomes a disappointment, then let’s not re-elect him in 2022. I told her that it’s time Filipinos repay him with their votes for him like what they did for Revilla and Lapid. I also told her that Pacman is a generous and God-fearing person being a preacher in his sect. Finally, unable to convince her, I conceded that Pacman is really walang alam, yes, na walang alam na magnakaw sa kaban ng bayan, unlike the others. I think that struck her and we parted ways without agreeing on anything about Pacman. But for me, I’m for Pacquiao not only for being my co-athlete but i know how to repay him for the greatness he had given to this country. I believe he has advisers who can guide him on how to be a good senator. Lahat naman ng bagay sa mundo ay napag-aaralan.. I am confident Pacquiao will surely win a senate seat on May 9.
