Pacquiao might eat his words again

THE talk in the boxing world today (April 8) is the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley 3 welterweight fight which will be held on April 9 (April 10 PH time) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The two split their first two meetings with Bradley winning the first one via a controversial split decision while Pacman undoubtedly got the second nod via unanimous decision. But in the eyes of the many (including this writer), Pacquiao is up, 2-0. This third fight will erase all doubts after their two battles and boxing experts will speculate how far the injured shoulder of Pacman after his last fight against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. last year, will go.

This third fight will erase all doubts after their two battles and boxing experts will speculate how far the injured shoulder of Pacman after his last fight against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. last year, will go.

Pacman said his fight against Bradley now is the most important of his boxing career because it will be his farewell fight. Do you think so? Honestly, I seriously doubt that because he’s been saying that many times over, particularly before his fight against Mayweather. He said that win or lose he’ll retire, but he did not. In fact, his promoter Bob Arum who had been with him for more than a decade admitted that he’s not counting on this fight to be the last for Pacquiao. I think I have to believe Arum. “He told me he is ready to retire but deep down I don’t believe he’ll retire,” said Arum in front of mediamen.

Yes, we have to believe Arum because he’s the closest person to Pacman being his promoter. And I think as long as Pacman’s hands can still pump like a piston and his feet can still dance the boogie inside the ring, every Pacman’s fight is still bankable whoever his opponent is. The fact is, if he wins, that will be the big reason for not hanging up his gloves, (again!) because big money can still be earned.

Pacman said that one of the reasons why he’s retiring because he’s now embarking on another national journey, and that’s his political venture, to the Philippine Senate. And it appears he will make it judging from the surveys that show him in 6th -7th spot even if he had not spent any time campaigning. Arum said that if Pacman doesn’t retire, win or lose against Bradley, he will pick the WBC (World Boxing Council) middleweight title holder Canelo Alvarez of Mexico to be Pacman’s next opponent. And if this plan pushes through and Pacman wins, it will be his 9th world title in different divisions! When that happens, that would again be hard to surpass or equal in his time. Yes, Alvarez is a legitimate middleweight prized fighter and too big for Pacquiao but Pacquiao based on experience can handle big opponents like Antonio Margarito, Oscar de la Hoya and Miguel Cotto.
