‘Binaysty’ here to stay
By Al S. Mendoza
WE talk about dynasty again.
Or, isn’t it “Binaysty?”
Remember, you read it first here: “Binaysty.”
For decades, Jojo Binay and his family ran Makati like their own fiefdom.
Jojo began as Makati officer-in-charge appointed by Tita Cory in 1986 following the overthrow of Marcos via People Power.
The Binays had been in power since.
After a couple 9-year stints at the helm, Jojo had Makati run by virtual proxy.
Elenita, Jojo’s wife, would be Makati mayor but in truth, it was Jojo running the show.
After Elenita, Jojo would go back as Makati mayor.
After a second 9-year stint as Makati mayor, Jojo’s son, JunJun, cutting his political teeth for years as barangay captain, was ripe for the post.
Unfortunately, JunJun may have strayed out of his Dad’s path and got himself embroiled in alleged City Hall fund scandals.
Can you believe that?
Jojo didn’t know about the hanky-panky as he is busy building blocks for his presidential bid in 2016?
JunJun would ultimately find himself getting suspended as mayor by the Ombudsman.
Not content, the Ombudsman, PNoy’s perceived toad, would perpetually disqualify JunJun from running for an elective post.
At first, the Binays planned to challenge the Ombudsman.
Until a final decision on the matter is handed down by the Courts, the Binays said JunJun would run for Makati mayor in 2016.
But this stance would soon die down just as fast.
Not another pain the ass, Jojo would say.
As deadline of filing for a certificate of candidacy on October 16 drew near, Abigail substituted JunJun.
Abigail who?
She is Jojo’s daughter-representative from Makati.
Another Jojo daughter, Nancy, is an incumbent senator.
Haven’t you heard the rumor?
There is a pending bill banning dynasty.
But it’s been gathering dust in the halls of Congress.
But, of course! Why would Congress pass a bill that will destroy its bread and butter?
Congressmen are the smartest crooks in town, have you forgotten?
Who said they hate, do not like, dynasty?
There is not even a dynasty to speak of.
I guess I had said it here before: Dynasty is a misnomer.
Dynasty is only for the China of old, where dynasties ruled for centuries.
A dynasty is an endless succession of rulers from one family to another. No election.
For a dynasty to end in China, it must be toppled in a war.
The war to topple supposed political dynasty here is through a vote of the people.
But that has not happened in Makati—and in many parts of the country where similar “Binaysties” exist.
Osmenas. Pimentels. Estradas. Zamoras. Abaloses. Belmontes. Zubirisis. Villars. Lapids. Revillas. Villafuertes. Lagmans.
Our laws are warped, indeed.
“Binaysty” is here to stay because the anti-dynasty bill is just that—a bill in the making. Forever.
