ENTERPRISING MADAM. This “power couple” pays real properties worth millions of pesos in cash, not cheques.

For instance, the wife, who holds a juicy position in a national government agency in Pangasinan, paid in cold cash more than P29-million for a vast land previously owned by a general in a town in the third district.

Reason for the cash payment: To avoid paper trail. Wise move especially if she can not explain how she managed to have that amount based on her and her hubby’s salaries alone.

Oh yes, they have a business right in her office. Her son is the contractor for their office supplies. She also has at least five favorite contractors from San Carlos City, Lingayen and Malasiqui.

Some officials thought she was generous and thoughtful when she gave lechon during their birthday parties or in some occasions, only to find out she charged the gifts to her office or asked her favored contractors to reimburse the payments. Matdem kan maung, Madam!

No wonder, I heard a joke in her office that tells of her and the hubby’s pastime to go inside their bedroom, not to show each other’s love, but to show how much they love their fortune by counting their monies stacked in their home sweet home, not in banks, for safekeeping. – Tita Roces

 

STRENGTHENING ANTI-DRUG COUNCILS. The recently-passed resolution urging all barangays, cities, and municipalities to (re)activate their anti-drug abuse councils was a good move.

It will definitely strengthen the campaign against illegal drugs as it is in the barangays where neighbors know each other and of each one’s activities including new faces and strangers entering their places. The responsibility being shared with the barangay folk will make the task of monitoring of trafficking of illegal drugs easier.

The resolution authored by Liga ng mga Barangay provincial president, BM Pogi Espino, serves as reminder to his fellow village chieftains and mayors the important role they play to be more active in the campaign against illegal drugs.- Johanne Macob
NO GATECRASHER. The presence of Ex-Congressman Mark Cojuangco during the launching of the new book of former President Fidel V. Ramos hosted by the provincial government drew some positive and negative commentaries, one of which accused Mark of being a gatecrasher.

But no, he was personally invited by Board Member Ranjit Ramos Shahani, a favorite nephew of the former president. It would not have looked good if Cojuangco did not arrive and just ignored the invitation since it was a public gathering by Pangasinenses and by those who love FVR. There was no politics behind his presence.

We spotted him on the next table to ours quietly listening and later patiently  lining up to have FVR sign the books he picked up for himself. – Leonardo Micua
